2 Common Collection Paths

1. Curbside Collection
Residents toss foam into the same bin as bottles and cans. A recycling truck collects the mix and delivers it to a material recovery facility (MRF).
2. Drop-Off Programs
Households or businesses bring loose foam to a depot. A truck later picks up that single-stream material, unless the site already densifies it on-site.
Across both systems, steps three through eight follow the same general playbook once the foam reaches the MRF.
Inside the Materials Recovery Facility
- Step 3: Receiving: Baled or loose recyclables arrive at the MRF. Workers or optical sorters separate EPS so it does not contaminate paper or plastics.
- Step 4: Final Separation: Mechanical screens or manual crews refine the sort. Cleaner foam results in safer equipment operation and higher resale prices.
- Step 5: Grinding: A grinder reduces clean foam to bead-sized flakes. Operators check for stray metal staples or food residue that could damage blades.
- Step 6: Transfer to Densifier: Ground foam moves by air blower or conveyor into a densifier. Some plants use manual feed for small batches.
- Step 7: Compaction: Heat and pressure squeeze air from the flakes and extrude a dense log. Logs are cooled, cut into blocks, and stacked on pallets.
- Step 8: Outbound Sale: The MRF sells blocks to brokers, chemical recyclers, or end-use manufacturers who turn them back into pellets or finished goods.
Why Densify?
A forty-eight-foot trailer packed with loose, baled foam weighs about sixteen thousand pounds. Fill that same trailer with densified blocks and you reach forty thousand pounds. The math is simple: fewer truck trips and a higher price per ton.
That density advantage also helps recyclers take advantage of emerging chemical recycling technologies, which accept greater levels of surface contamination because the polymer is broken back down to its monomer state.
Securing Loads for the Road
Once blocks are on a pallet, they must remain tightly secured from the dock to the processor. Slight rebounds or sudden stops can cause straps to pop, turning a profitable load into loose scrap.
