Don’t Forget Your Other Tools
If you’re new to using steel strapping, it’s important to note that a tensioner alone is not going to help you make much progress. This is a tool that is meant to work as part of a kit, usually with a sealer and a cutter. The sealer will hold the strap in place, allowing it to maintain the tension you have created with your steel strapping tensioner. From there, a cutter can trim up the extra strap, leaving you with a finished product. Be sure to check out the rest of our steel strapping tools to get everything you need!

Frequently Asked Questions About Steel Strapping Tensioners
What is a steel strapping tensioner?
A steel strapping tensioner is the hand tool you use to pull steel strap tight around a load before it is sealed. You feed the strap through the tool, grip it, and work the handle until the strap is drawn snug against the pallet, coil, bundle, or crate. Without proper tension, the strap will not hold the load together in transit. Essentially, the tensioner is what turns a loose wrap into a secured load.
How does a manual steel strapping tensioner work?
Most standard manual steel strapping tensioners use a feedwheel mechanism, though heavy-duty and irregular-load applications may use windlass or rack-and-pinion tools. In a feedwheel tensioner, the strap is threaded into the tool, a gripper holds the bottom layer of strap in place, and a knurled feedwheel pulls the top layer through as you crank the handle. The strap tightens progressively with each stroke, so you control exactly how much tension goes into the load. Once the strap is tight, you hold the tension while you place and crimp the seal, then cut the strap free.
What is the difference between a steel strap tensioner and a poly strap tensioner?
They may share the same name, but they are not interchangeable. While both systems use tensioning mechanisms like feedwheels or windlasses, the tools are engineered for completely different material properties. The grip surfaces are built for very different strap thicknesses and materials, so a steel tool will shred plastic banding and a poly tool will not put enough tension into a steel strap.
Think of it like fuel and engines; the right fuel in the matching engine keeps everything running, and the same is true for banding and tools. Even when the widths sound identical, such as 3/4″ steel strap and 3/4″ plastic strap, the thickness of each strap varies greatly, so the strap will not seat or grip correctly in the wrong tool. This is a safety concern, not just a performance one. If you run both steel and plastic banding in your facility, you need a dedicated tool for each.
What size steel strapping does a tensioner handle?
Most manual steel strapping tensioners are built around a strap width range, commonly covering 1/2″ through 3/4″, with heavier models running up to 1-1/4″. You need to match the tool to both the width and the thickness of the strap you run. If you tell us the strap size and grade you are using, we will point you to the tensioner that fits it.
Do I need a heavy duty steel strap tensioner?
It depends on the load. Light and regular duty applications — bundling, light crating, general shipping — are handled well by a standard feedwheel tensioner. A heavy-duty steel strap tensioner is the right call when you are securing dense, high-value, or high-tensile loads such as steel coils, castings, machinery, lumber packs, or anything moving by rail or long haul. Heavier tools apply more tension with less operator effort, which matters when your crew is strapping all day.
Can I use a steel tensioner for pallet securing?
Yes. A steel tensioner is a common choice for pallet securing when the load is heavy, rigid, or sharp-edged and you need the strap to hold without stretching. A steel strap does not give the way plastic does, so it keeps a rigid load locked in position. For lighter or slightly compressible pallet loads, polyester or polypropylene strapping and the matching tools are often the better fit — we carry both, so you are not forced into one system.
How do I tension steel strapping properly?
Start by wrapping the strap around the load and overlapping the two ends. Slide the seal onto the overlap, thread the strap into the tensioner, and crank until the strap is drawn tight against the load with no slack. Keep the tool square to the strap so it tracks straight, and stop when the strap is firm against the load, as over-tensioning can damage the product, the strap, or the seal.
While holding tension, crimp the seal with a steel strapping sealer, then cut the strap. Always wear cut-resistant gloves and eye protection, and keep clear of the strap line; tensioned steel strap stores energy and can whip if it releases unexpectedly.
What tools do I need alongside a tensioner?
A complete steel strapping station usually includes three tools plus consumables: a tensioner to pull the strap tight, a sealer to crimp the seal, and a strap cutter to safely cut the band. You will also need seals sized to your strap and a dispenser or strapping cart to feed the coil cleanly. We supply all of it, so you can outfit a station in a single order.
